Michigan EMS Instructor-Coordinator (EMSIC) Practice Exam

Formative assessment is designed specifically to evaluate a student's progress toward specific learning outcomes throughout the educational process. It is an ongoing assessment that provides timely feedback to both instructors and learners, allowing them to identify strengths and weaknesses. This form of assessment is essential in shaping the teaching and learning experience, as it informs instructional decisions and helps students understand what they need to improve on before they reach the final evaluation stage.

In contrast to summative assessment, which typically occurs at the end of an instructional period to measure overall learning achievements and competencies, formative assessments are conducted during the learning process to enhance and guide that learning. Diagnostic assessment, on the other hand, is focused on uncovering students’ existing knowledge and skills prior to instruction, while norm-referenced assessment compares a student's performance to a group norm rather than measuring progress toward specific learning outcomes. Therefore, the nature of formative assessment as an evaluative tool directly aligns with tracking and improving student progress in the context of specific learning outcomes.
